After graduation from Occidental College in June ’62, James Anhalt went to the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis TN where he studied medicine for 12 quarters, graduating in September of ’65.  During that time, he married Mary Jo Alleman.  After graduating, he did a rotating internship at the Kern General Hospital in Bakersfield CA. from Oct. ’65 to Oct.’66. 

      In September of ’66, James was commissioned an officer in the US Army, and following his internship, he reported to active duty at Ft. Sam Houston, TX.  for officer basic training. Cpt. Anhalt was then transferred to Ft Bliss in El Paso, TX where he was assigned duty as Battalion Surgeon (General Medical Officer) to the 4th. Bn./60th. Art.  Shortly thereafter the entire battalion was deployed to Camp Townes, Viet Nam where Cpt Anhalt received the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in Ground operations Against Hostile Forces.

      After one year of active duty in Viet Nam at the battalion Aid station, Cpt. Anhalt was reassigned to stateside duty at Ft. Bliss, first as a clinic physician and later as Chief Medical Examiner for new recruits. Cpt Anhalt was honorably discharged from military service on Oct. 23, 1968.

     Dr. Anhalt returned to California following his discharge from the army and began a four-year residency in Pathology at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.  He completed his residency and was certified by the American Board of Pathology in May of 1973.

     Dr. Anhalt’s professional activities include laboratory Directorship’s at Kern Medical Center, Delano Community Hospital, Kern Valley Hospital, San Joaquin Community Hospital, and Physician’s Hospital.  He was also in partnership a Physicians’ Automated Laboratory, a full-service outpatient laboratory in Bakersfield Calfornia; he was also the Medical Director of the Houchin Community Blood Bank in Bakersfield.  He was a member of the County Medical Society and served on the Kern County Foundation for Medical Care.

      Jim and Mary Jo Anhalt raised four brilliant children, Carolyn Rose, James III, Michael John and Carl Thomas. 

    James in now retired.  After a brief four-year move to Hilo, Hawaii, he now lives in Rancho Mirage, CA with two dogs, a cockatiel, a turtle, goldfish and a small collection of his favorite orchid plants.
