  • Walnuts

Someday I’ll find a photo of some of the 80 walnut trees that surrounded us when we moved to Isaak Lane. At the time, I hated walnuts but have strong memories of gathering and shelling nuts, getting my fingers black, and selling them to people who were excited to get them for just 25 cents a pound! Along with all the chores of living on a farm, as kids we definitely did not appreciate at the time the the opportunity that dad gave us to learn how to grow our own food.

Now of course, I miss those days… and live in rural areas where I can once again grow my own food or at least get the majority of it from local farmers. And I have learned to love walnuts, especially after discovering that toasting them vastly improves their flavor!

This week, Julia Watson shared this recipe on her brilliant substack.

And I made them, with lemon and chocolate ganache fillings and glazes.
